Ghost Rider is a supernatural antihero appearing in Marvel Comics. The original Ghost Rider was a western themed character, but the more well known iteration debuted in Marvel Spotlight #5 (August 1972).
This Ghost Rider is usually associated with Johnny Blaze, a motorcycle stunt performer who makes a deal with Mephisto to save his adoptive father’s life. However, the bargain results in Blaze becoming bound to the Spirit of Vengeance, Zarathos. At night, or in the presence of evil, Blaze transforms into Ghost Rider: a flaming skeleton with superhuman strength and the ability to control a mystical motorcycle.
Ghost Rider's mission is to punish the wicked, often fueled by his own inner turmoil and the demands of the Spirit of Vengeance he is bound to. He wields hellfire and can inflict the Penance Stare, forcing wrongdoers to experience the pain they have caused others.
